12 Riones of Rome - Esquilino

This rione  owes its name to one of the seven hills of Rome on which it stands.
In the time of Emperor Augustus the gardens of Maecenas were built here.
Today the area has roads and squares modelled on the city of Turin which were built at the time of the Unification of Italy.

The district includes the remains of the Baths of Trajan that were built over Nero's Golden House, the Domus Aurea. Visits to this archeological site include a multi-media experience, details here

In the church of San Pietro in Vincoli can be found Michelangelo's sculpture of Moses which now benefits from a  new lighting system.

There is also a tomb to a baker which is very appropriate for an area that is 'foodie' heaven

The indoor market sells ethnic produce alongside Italian fruits and vegetables.

Panella bakes bread in all sorts of shapes and sizes and always has wonderful window displays.

Regoli is a well known pasticceria full of delicious pastries which can be sampled in their caffe next door.

Mercato Centrale can be accessed through Termini station as well as having an entrance on Via Giolitti. Inside you will find some of the best food that Rome has to offer including pizza from Bonci.

Our 'Rione Refreshment' tip is Roscioli 2, Via Buonarotti. This belongs to the same family as the Forno & Ristorante near Campo di Fiori and has an impressive Tavolo Calda or ready prepared hot food to eat in or take out.
